WTF Wednesday: Are We TRYING to Kill People!?

According to the CDC,

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

So WTF message are we sending women, young women who know no better, in suggesting that they get a mammogram once every two years?

  1. Yeah really! And not only that, I heard this study suggested that women don’t need to get regular mammograms annually starting at the age of 40, but every other year starting at age 50! AND they claim that breast self-exams are not as helpful as we think. I am so disgusted and infuriated. I’m a nurse and my patients trust the advice and medical information that I give them. There’s no way I’m telling them not to do their own breast exam or not to get regular annual exams as previously suggested. This is insane. I’m glad you’re posting this.

  2. …and now this: new guidelines state that women should have pap smears every two to three years now instead of annually. Supposedly “Performing the Pap test every other year in women between the ages of 21 and 29, and every three years in women over 30 is just as good as doing the test annually.”

I don’t know how to feel.
